A little fiddly for larger hands

The Nintendo Switch Joy-Con controllers are the best Nintendo Switch accessory of all, and come already bundled with the device. However, it's still handy to have an extra pair if you want to play with friends on games such as Super Smash Bros. and Mario Kart 8.

Initially launched in either grey or neon red and blue, the controllers now come in an increasing variety of colours and special editions so you can take your pick. The most popular pairings are Neon Blue/Neon Yellow and Green/Purple.

The Joy-Con can be used together attached to the Nintendo Switch or separately, which is why you can also buy Joy-Con individually and mix and match colours. It does work out cheaper to buy Joy-Con controllers in twos.

02. Nintendo Switch Pro Controller

The best Nintendo Switch accessory for traditional gamers

Specifications

Compatible with: Switch, Switch Lite, Switch OLED
Weight: 400g
Battery life: Up to 40 hours per charge
Charging time: 6 hours to full

+
Traditional feel

Superior battery life
+

On the heavy side

The chunky Nintendo Switch Pro Controller is the Nintendo Switch accessory for gamers who prefer to play with a traditional style controller. The standard Joy-Con controllers don't suit all hand sizes, and while perfect when playing as a handheld, of you want to play Switch games on the TV the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller is the best choice.

Although the Joy-Con controllers have a grip and can be untied to form a single device, they don't have traditional D-pads like you get with the Switch Pro Controller. It's ergonomically solid and offers motion control, HD rumble and Amiibo support, making it a great alternative. There are several special editions of the controller to match your favourite games.

03. PowerA Enhanced Wireless Controller

The best unoffocial Nintendo Switch controller

Specifications

Compatible with: Switch, Switch Lite
Weight: 266g
Battery life: Up to 30 hours from 2 AA batteries
Charging time: N/A

Reasons to buy

+
Great value for money
+
Lightweight design
+
Includes motion control

Reasons to avoid

-
Not rechargeable

The PowerA Enhanced Wireless Controller is the same style of pad as Nintendo's official Switch Pro Controller (above) but for less, which makes it onto our list of the best Nintendo Switch accessories.

This wireless controller from PowerA is comfortable, accurate and comes with motion control. At 166g, it's nice and light, too. Running off AA batteries, these third-party controllers are nice and cheap, and come in a number of themed designs, from Animal Crossing to Pokemon.

While the PowerA Enhanced Wireless Controller is lighter than the official Nintendo Switch Pro Controller, it lacks that pads rechargeable pack. This is the reason it's lighter. If you're a casual player this is not a problem, but if you're putting 120 hours into The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – one of the best Nintendo Switch – then you may prefer Nintendo's own pad.

04. TFY Nintendo Switch Car Headrest Holder

The best way to play Nintendo Switch on the go

Specifications

Compatible with: Switch, Switch OLED
Weight: N/A
Battery life: N/A
Charging time: N/A

Reasons to buy

+
Easy to install and use
+
Perfect for gaming on the go (for your passengers)

Reasons to avoid

-
Elastic fasteners are a little tight

The TFY Nintendo Switch Car Headrest Holder is the ideal way to keep passengers quiet on a long car journey. Simply attach the holder and slip in the Nintendo Switch, keeping the Joy-Cons aside, and you're good to go. It's that simple.

In use I find the elastic fasteners are a little tight, meaning you have to push and pull the Switch to get it in. But better this than your precious games console dropping out on a journey.

If you're looking to upgrade your car with a gaming accessory this Switch holder is a great choice. There are similar alternatives around but the TFY Nintendo Switch Car Headrest Holder is the one that has caught my eye.

05. ADZ Joy-Con Grip

The best Nintendo Switch Joy-Con adapters

Specifications

Compatible with: Switch, Switch Lite, Switch OLED
Weight: 100g
Battery life: N/A
Charging time: N/A

Reasons to buy

+
Great fit and colour match to the existing Joy-Cons
+
All the Joy-Con buttons work when setup

Reasons to avoid

-
Becomes loose after extended play (around ten months)

The ADZ Joy-Con Grips are ideal for anyone who finds the standard Joy-Con controllers a little too small but doesn't want to upgrade to a full game pad style design. These are a smart way to change the way you play on the Nintendo Switch.

First, I find the colours match the standard Joy-Cons well and the grips are designed to fit the controllers nicely. Unlike some grips you can use all the Joy-Con buttons, including the shoulder triggers. These are ergonomic and well designed.

In use I do find the Joy-Cons slip a little over time and extended play, but this is to be expected. The grips come with a 12-year warranty so it's likely the manufacturer knows its rubber gives way after this time – it's made worse if you remove and slip in Joy-Cons regularly. Overall, however, the ADZ Joy-Con Grips for Nintendo Switch are some of the best on the market.

06. Mayflash GameCube Controller Adapter for Switch

The best Nintendo Switch accessory for GameCube fans

Specifications

Compatible with:: Switch, Switch OLED
Weight: 181g
Dimensions: 12.5 x 10 x 2.5cm

Reasons to buy

+
Super-responsive
+
Simple and inexpensive
+
Works for the Nintendo Wii U too

Reasons to avoid

-
Not particularly pretty

The Mayflash GameCube Controller Adapter for Switch is the best Switch accessory if you're an old-school Nintendo fan itching to play the Switch with your GameCube controller.

With its multi-joystick set up, super-responsive D-Pad, and double row of shoulder buttons, the GameCube controller remains one of the most loved controllers of all time, providing more inputs than a lot of other controllers that came before or after. It's actually one of the best controllers for playing Super Smash Bros. and so this adapter comes highly recommended.

Fortunately, you can use the GameCube controller with the Switch simply by using a GameCube controller adapter. There are several on the market, but this option from Mayflash is inexpensive and does the job. It supports built-in vibration feedback with no delays with two USB cables making the experience more stable. It works with the Wii U too.

Product shot of the Ring Fit Adventure, one of the best Nintendo accessories

07. Nintendo Ring Fit Adventure

The best Nintendo Switch accessory for fitness

Specifications

Compatible with: All Switches, but best for Switch or Switch OLED
Weight: 698g
Dimensions: 34 x 33 x 7 cm

Reasons to buy

+
Makes exercise fun
+
Two-part activity tracking
+
It's a real game

Reasons to avoid

-
Not suitable for Switch Lite

Ring Fit Adventure not only delivers the same fitness style of play that made the Wii so popular but it adds the extra element of role-play into the mix. The game casts you as a runner fighting massive monsters, and you have to use physical movements like running, planks, push-ups and yoga poses to gain more power to defeat them.

You slot one half of the Joy-Con into the resistance ring and you strap the other half to your thigh in a holster. Together, they measure how you move and connect your actions to your character’s on the screen.

Better still, outside of the game this Nintendo Switch accessory comes with the Ring Fit excise game. You can set routines from yoga to resistance training and get a work out in your living room. Just as the old Wii would do, Ring Fit records and plans your progress.

Ring Fit Adventure is great novel indoor fun, and a lot more entertaining than straight exercise classes. But for those who want a straight workout, you can do that too. (Note that to be able to see the action while you play, you’ll want to dock your Switch to your TV, so this isn’t really an option for the Switch Lite.)

Product shot of the Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit, one of the best Nintendo accessories

08. Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit

The ultimate Nintendo Switch accessory for Mario Kart

Specifications

Compatible with: Switch, Switch OLED, Switch Lite
Battery life: Around 3 hours
Time to recharge : Around 3.5 hours

Reasons to buy

+
Clever use of augmented reality
+
Create your own racetracks

Reasons to avoid

-
Expensive for multiplayer
-
Doesn't like carpet

Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit is a game you play in your own home with a real remote control car. This Nintendo Switch accessory turns your living room, or anywhere else into a racetrack, which can only be great fun.

You place the checkpoint arches around the room, then drive the car around to create your own track. The kart has a camera, which live streams its view to your Nintendo Switch console via Wi-Fi. When you race you’ll see other rivals on the Switch screen, like a normal Mario Kart game. Neat!

Up to four people can race at once (they’ll each need to buy a car though; the pack only includes one) and there are four-speed levels, with the battery lasting around 90 minutes on the middle speeds.

Of course, there are some practical issues with a setup like this. You need a reasonably hard floor or lino – the kart will struggle with rugs and thick-pile carpet – and the more space you have, the better. There's a Mario set and a Luigi set, so take your pick.

Product shot of the Joy-Con Wheel Pair, one of the best Nintendo accessories

09. Joy-Con Wheel Pair

The best Nintendo Switch accessory for driving game fans

Specifications

Compatible with:: Switch, Switch OLED, Switch Lite
Dimensions: 25.4 x 17.78 x 15.24 cm

Reasons to buy

+
Includes two Joy-Con Wheels
+
Large, comfortable buttons
+
Makes it easier to play Mario Kart

Reasons to avoid

-
 Wheels are quite small

The Joy-Con Wheel Pair is the best Nintendo Switch accessory for Mario Kart fans. This wireless Joy-Con steering wheel adaptor lets you drive using a wheel rather than the usual controller. It uses the Joy-Con's motion sensors to give the feeling of really driving a cart. It can take a while to get the hang of, just like driving for real, and the wheels are a little small, but they do enhance the experience of racing games on the Switch.

Best of all, unlike the Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit above, the Joy-Con Wheels come in pairs, so you don't have to send your friends off to buy their own if you want a multiplayer race. There's sometimes quite low availability of the official Nintendo Joy-Con Wheels, and they more often come bundled in with the Switch and Mario Kart 8. Various other brands make their own alternatives.

Product shot of the Mumba Switch case, one of the best Nintendo accessories

10. Mumba Nintendo Switch carrying case

The best Nintendo Switch accessory for keeping your console safe

Specifications

Compatible with: Switch
Material: EVA and fabric
Dimensions: 27 x 13.11 x 7.01cm
Weight: 349.27g
:

Reasons to buy

+
Inexpensive
+
Large capacity
+
Good protection

Reasons to avoid

-
Fabric may fray with heavy use

The Mumba Nintendo Switch carrying case is the best Nintendo Switch accessory for players who want to keep their portable console nice and safe. There are lots of options for Nintendo Switch cases, but this Mumba case is our favourite. It offers full shock and scratch protection for an excellent price. The case has a durable EVA hard shell with a water-resistant surface and it's easy to carry.

This is a big case with enough room to fit your Nintendo Switch as well as game cards, Joy-Cons, cables, and other accessories. The inside flap that fits all these extras is a soft to touch finish ensuring your Switch's screen won't get scratched. Sturdy and with plenty of room this is a great all-round case, though it could be too chunky for some players.

11. Tomtoc Nintendo Switch Lite case

The best Nintendo Switch accessory case for Switch Lite

Specifications

Compatible with: Switch Lite
Material: Polyester
Dimensions: 11.98 cm x 23.50 cm x 6.50cm
Weight: 221g

Reasons to buy

+
Ultra slim
+
Comes in a range of colours

Reasons to avoid

-
Protection limited to splashes and scratches

If you've got a Nintendo Switch Lite, we recommend this splashproof case from Tomtoc as one of the best Switch accessories you can buy. Slim and light, this Tomtioc case perfectly fits the form of the device, even looking like a Nintendo Switch Lite.

There's enough padding to offer protection from knocks and scratches, and the raise areas help to reduce direct pressure on the buttons and joysticks. It's available in a load of fun colour combinations, matching the colourful style of the Switch itself. And there's an adjustable and removable hand strap to make it flexible and comfortable to carry.

12. Anker PowerCore 20,100 power bank

The best Nintendo Switch accessory for portable charging

Specifications

Compatible with: Switch, Switch Lite, Switch OLED

Dimensions: 16.6 x 5.8 x 2.2cm
Weight: 356g

Reasons to buy

+
The battery is large
+
Rapid charging
+
Charges Switch several times

Reasons to avoid

-
It's quote heavy

The Anker PowerCore 20,100 power bank is a must for anyone who's taking their Nintendo Switch on a long journey. If you're away from a wall socket, you don't want to be constantly worrying about it running out of juice. A solid, reliable portable charger can save your stress, and here's our top choice.

Anker's one of the most reliable names for portable chargers and this is one of its best, housing a massive 20,100mAh battery. That's enough to charge your Nintendo Switch several times before it needs a recharge itself. For more options, see our best power banks buying guide.

Product shot of the AmFilm, one of the best Nintendo accessories

13. AmFilm

The best Nintendo Switch accessory for protecting your screen

Specifications

Compatible with: Switch (also available for Switch Lite)
Material: tempered glass
Thickness: 0.33mm
Number of screen protectors: 2

Reasons to buy

+
Great value

Reasons to avoid

-
Require care to install

AmFilm is designed to keep your Nintendo Switch screen's clean and scratch resistant, and as such is one of our favourite Nintendo Switch accessories. Whenever you slip your Nintendo Switch in and out of its dock, it can pick up scratches on the display screen. So it makes sense to invest in a screen protector, and the AmFilm tempered glass screen protector offers excellent value.

It's relatively easy to apply (although you do need to take care to avoid bubbles), and it doesn't affect the Switch's touchscreen performance. The price above is for the Switch screen protector, but AmFilm also offers a Nintendo Switch Lite screen protector.

Product shot of the Sandisk microSDXC for Nintendo Switch, one of the best Nintendo accessories

14. Sandisk microSDXC for Nintendo Switch

The best SD card for Nintendo Switch

Specifications

Compatible with: Switch, Switch Lite, Switch OLED
Storage: 64GB, 128GB, 256GB, 400GB, 512GB
Read Speed: up to 100mb/s
Warranty: Lifetime (or 30 years)
SD Reader: No
Ultra High Speed: UHS-3

Reasons to buy

+
Official memory card
+
Reliable brand
+
Incredibly fast

Reasons to avoid

-
Not the cheapest SD card

The Sandisk microSDXC for Nintendo Switch card is the best Nintendo Switch accessory for anyone who needs to save their games and data – which is everyone. Once you start to build up a collection of Nintendo Switch games, you'll want memory cards to store them on. Sandisk is one of the most recognised makers around, and this range has Nintendo's official stamp of approval.

With a range of sizes, from 64GB right up to 512GB, they provide read speeds of up to 100mb for fast loading and a minimum 30-year warranty. These SD cards even come with Switch-oriented designs, with a mushroom on the 128GB version and an Animal Crossing leaf on the 512GB.

Product shot of the Skull & Co. GripCase Crystal, one of the best Nintendo accessories

15. Skull & Co. GripCase Crystal

The best Nintendo Switch case grip

Specifications

Compatible with: Switch (also available for Switch Lite)
Material: TPU
Weight: 680g
Dimensions:: 34.7 x 16.3 x 8.9cm

Reasons to buy

+
Great fit for all hand sizes
+
Comes in a range of colours

Reasons to avoid

-
Dock connection could be better

The Skull & Co. GripCase Crystal is the case you need if you want a bit more grip for your Switch. Here's a case option that offers good protection along with three sets of replaceable grips, which allow you to customise it for your hand size. It also protects the top corners of your Joy-Cons while also giving you larger triggers for the ZL and ZR buttons.

You can even dock the Switch without having to remove the case. While this sounds great, the build quality is lacking slightly as it feels like you need to force the Switch. I minor gripe. This is a great option if people with different-sized hands use your Switch. This one is for the original Switch, but there's also a version for the Switch Lite.
